Why should anyone respect a capricious, mean-minded, stupid God who created a world full of injustice and pain? Religion is a multi-billion dollar industry based on the bronze-age fairytales of goat herders and used to frighten the weak-minded into submission. Those benefiting financially, and that includes politicians as well as the pastor of the little brown church in the Wildwood, will do everything in their power to keep the con going. The sooner we slough off the old religious crap the sooner we’ll be able to get on with the business of saving ourselves because ta god who did nothing to prevent 6 million of his 'chosen people' from dying in Nazi death camps is clearly not going to do anything useful now.

Fake News

Origin of Trump's Fake News claims, from an interview with Lesley Stahl.

LESLEY STAHL: It's just me, my boss, and him (Trump). He has a huge office -- and he's attacking the press. There were no cameras, there was nothing going on and I said, 'That is getting tired, why are you doing it? You're doing it over and over and it's boring. It's time to end that, you've won the nomination. And why do you keep hammering at this?' And he said: 'You know why I do it? I do it to discredit you all and demean you all so when you write negative stories about me no one will believe you.'

So, put that in your head for a minute.

OK, science for dummies time. There are two principal sources of energy at the Earth's surface, radioactive decay of heavy elements in the Earth's core, mantle and crust, and the Sun. Of these, the Sun is overwhelmingly the more important. Solar energy peaks around 5780 Angstroms (0.578 microns) wavelength, in the yellow green. The earth's atmosphere is largely transparent at these wavelengths. Incident radiation from the Sun heats the Earth's surface, to an average temperature of around 290 deg. Kelvin (59 deg. F).

As the Earth is roughly a blackbody, it re-radiates some of the energy it has absorbed, peaking at about 10.6 microns in the mid-infrared. At this wavelength, the atmosphere is largely opaque to radiation (mainly due to CO2 and water vapor), so the energy gets absorbed by the atmosphere. It is only weakly radiated away into space.

The net result is that the biosphere retains more of the solar energy than the surface would if there were no atmosphere (the temperature would be around 255 Kelvin, 0 deg. F).

Changing the opacity of the atmosphere in the mid-infrared will change the amount of heat it stores. Increase the CO2, you increase the opacity, you increase the heat stored, you warm the atmosphere. Sound familiar? The Greenhouse Effect. Global warming. It's just simple physics.
